Poetry Memorization and Recitation

Today, students received a worksheet containing important information about their poetry project. We viewed videos of students reciting poetry and learned about the value of memorization and recitation. If you would like to know more, please check out these websites.

Included on the worksheet is the rubric that will be used to grade students when they recite their poems on Wednesday, December 2nd. Also, we discussed important strategies for memorizing and reciting poetry.

** TIP – There are 9 nights between now and Thanksgiving. If you count up the lines in your poem and divide by 9 – you will know how many lines you have to memorize each night to know your entire poem by the break. This will give you a week to practice the recitation of the poem.

Week of Nov. 16

Wordly Wise 8 was assigned.  Complete A,B,C, and D in the book.  Write a one-page story using 10 words from this week’s list.

We met with every student today.  They brought in three poems and together we picked one that they will be required to memorize and present to our class the first week of December.

We are reading the Jungle Book in class and will discuss in a shared inquiry prior to the Thanksgiving break.

Book Projects:

Remember to keep up with your book project. You should have chosen the project you will be doing for  October  by now. Also, you should be well into the process of planning and gathering materials. If you work on your project bit by bit – it will not overwhelm you.

We will both be at a conference on Friday, so any rough drafts must be brought in by tomorrow if you would like us to check them for you.

For all of you out sick – Concentrate on getting well. Do the best you can to get some work done at home, and we will get you caught up with the rest when you return. Your health should be your main priority!
