Poetry

We hope that you have “immersed” yourself in poetry this week. Check out the website http://poetryoutloud.org/poems/browsepoems.html. It is a great resource for poems and other information on the memorization and recitation of poetry.

Week of 11/8

Homework – Due Friday: Wordly Wise 7 – A,B,C,D & E and cursive sheet. There will be a spelling quiz and a vocabulary quiz on Friday.

November book project: The Poetry project was assigned today. Students received two worksheets outlining the due dates and expectations for this project. Over the next week, they should be “immersing” themselves in poetry. Students will be responsible for bringing in  3 poems by 3 different authors on Monday, November 15th. At this time, we will have individual conferences with each student to choose a poem for their project.

Poems must be memorized by Wednesday, December 1st. The remaining requirements for this project (decorated poster, poetic devices worksheet and 2nd copy of poem) are also due on 12/1/10. All students received a rubric that they can refer to for the expectations of all aspects of this project. We will be discussing memorization strategies and presentation techniques in lessons presented next week.

NO HOMEWORK THIS WEEK!!

We hope everyone enjoyed their extended weekend off. We were busy here at school creating new lessons and rubrics to go along with some of our upcoming projects.

Thanks to those students who have brought in music and lyrics that contain some of the poetic elements we have been learning about in class.

Today, we completed our October book project in class. As we mentioned before, there will not be a home project assigned for the month of October.

We will be assigning a long-term poetry project for the month of November on Monday. Details to follow…

**LA Challenge

Today, we examined poetic devices in song lyrics. We listened to “Wordplay” by Jason Mraz and found examples of of alliteration, rhyme, onomatopoeia, personification, metaphor and simile. Check out this song at (click “listen now” at the top of the page):

Our challenge to the students is to bring in their favorite songs that contain great examples of the literary devices we have highlighted. Lyrics must be school appropriate! This is not a required assignment, but we strongly encourage all students to take up this challenge and listen to their favorite songs in a different way.

Reminder – Monday and Tuesday are days off for students. When you return to school on Wednesday, November 3rd, you must bring your October book with you as we will be completing an in-school project for the month of October.

Week of 10/25

Students are reminded that they must be finishing up the October book that they self selected.  There will not be a project that is assigned for home this month.  Instead of the normal take-home project students will be working in class on an assignment.  The book must be completed prior to Nov. 3.
